Let's get some formalities out of the way

The Digital Autonomy Machine Experiment is a public engagement study conducted by the Ethical Web and Data Infrastructure in the Age of AI (EWADA) research group at the University of Oxford. We are working to better understand how people across the world want control in the digital world, which we call digital autonomy. This means not just how you want to handle your data sharing but also making sure your data can be part of solving global issues, like research projects, when used responsibly.

Purpose of the Research: The research aims to explore how individuals want to control the sharing of their personal data. We have created this platform so that as many persons across the world can think critically and let us know how they would like for their personal data to be managed.

Your role: You are invited to participate in this research as a member of the public. You'll be presented with 8 scenarios and asked to say how long you would be willing to wait for a new service that we have which allows you to better manage your personal data. Rest assured that we will tell you more about this new service before you make your decision about your willingness to wait.

Voluntary Participation: Your involvement is voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time without negative consequences.

Benefits: By participating, you will contribute to a global study that examines people's preferences for data control. It will also help to design better autonomy-enhancing technology for the public.

Data Collection: In addition to your responses to the 8 scenarios, background information such as your country, age, gender, and education will be collected to understand how preferences vary among different groups.

Data Protection: The University of Oxford is responsible for protecting your personal data, and they will process it for research purposes in the public interest. Your data will be securely stored and will not be identifiable in publications.

Ethical Review: The study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance from the University of Oxford (Approval number: CS_C1A_23_025).
